MTI Controls and Utilities Integration

The MTI ProVision Integrated Control System provides for interface with various utility control systems (Lighting, HVAC, Perimeter, Plumbing, etc) through the use of the international standard, BACNet/IP. The MTI control system can use this widely implemented standard to activate addresses on a third-party system and receive inputs back from that same system.

How It Works

A designer can obtain the necessary BACNet information from the third-party system, such as the device ID, instance IDs for the inputs or outputs, and the type of value that the I/O expects (analog or digital). The designer can then use MTI’s design application, ProDesign, to add an object to a screen that will represent the BACnet I/O point. In the “tag” for the object, the designer can set the BACnet information for the point. Once the design has been created in ProDesign, the designer can then implement the design by configuring ProVision to use it. ProVision will execute with the design, incorporating the use of BACnet in the added object, and when an operator clicks on the object, ProVision will use the BACnet/IP protocol to send an output to the third-party system.

Benefits

  1. BACnet/IP is a very generic standard which allows for interoperability between a wide range of devices. Because BACnet supports both analog and digital I/O, ProVision can control devices ranging from dimmer switches to thermostats to relays.

  2. Because BACnet/IP is an IP-based protocol, the third-party system can be easily integrated into the same IP-network that the control system is using without the need for a conversion of mediums.

  3. MTI has used BACnet/IP to interface with various systems. Some examples of such interfaces include the following:

    • The control of lights in a facility through BACnet enabled lighting control systems. This control includes the use of dimming capabilities, having separate dimmer settings for day and night modes within a dorm.

    • Integration with plumbing control systems that implement BACnet to shut off water supply to broken fixtures, or prevent the use of showers during certain times.

    • The control of electrical circuits in a facility through BACnet enabled electrical control panels.
