MTI Controls and Generic Integrations

The MTI ProVision Integrated Control System has a unique feature that allows it to integrate with many third-party systems that implement a serial interface using a text-based protocol. ProVision can be configured to watch for keywords coming from a third-party system through a serial port and alarm to specific I/O points based on those keywords.

How It Works

To start, a designer can add objects to a screen in ProDesign and then tag those objects to addresses within the MTI control system. Within each tag, the designer can give keywords that should raise an alarm for each point. Then, the designer can configure ProVision to monitor a serial port on the computer that is tied to a third-party system. When that system sends a message with the given keyword, ProVision will indicate an alarm on the corresponding object on the screen, log the alarm in the activity log, and take actions based on the programming.

Benefits

  1. Many third-party manufacturers (fire alarms, perimeter detection, duress) provide simple, text-based, serial interfaces to their systems.

  2. Using a serial-to-ethernet converter, the third-party system can be integrated into the IP network used by MTI’s control system without the need for locating an interface computer near the third-party equipment.

  3. Some examples of how MTI uses the information from these systems include:

    • Annunciating fire alarms on the control station during an emergency.

    • Indicating a duress or man-down alarm on the control station.

    • Indicating a perimeter violation for a zone on a perimeter detection system.

    • Calling up the video stream for cameras in the area in which an alarm occurs.
